Do You Fear Chiropractic?

by Dr. Andrew T. Brady, Chiropractic Physician

Dr. Andrew T. BradyRecently I was talking with a patient about her friend who was having a number of different health issues. My patient suggested that she come in to see me, and that it sounded like I might be able to help. The friend responded with, “I would never go see a chiropractor.” The discussion quickly ended.

I don’t hear this too often, but when I do it saddens me deeply. I believe the reason for statements like this is that people fear chiropractic.

The feeling of fear is a protective mechanism we have been given in order to help us survive and avoid harm or injury. Some fears are rational and others are irrational. For example, I fear flying. I would rather drive to my destination even though flying is the safest form of travel and tens of thousands of people die every year in car accidents. My fear of flying is an irrational fear because out of 1.73 million passengers flying in the United States daily, nearly zero are harmed or killed. The way to overcome an irrational fear is to educate and understand the potential threat. After looking up the number of flights in the U.S. every day and how many of those crash, I felt much more at ease before flying last month.

Some people have an irrational fear of chiropractic, because they don’t understand it, and we often fear what we don’t understand. People who fear or don’t understand chiropractic usually think it can paralyze them or cause some other radical injury. These are irrational fears because out of the millions of chiropractic adjustments given every day, zero are harmed and there is not a single medically documented case of a chiropractor causing paralysis with an adjustment in the history of our profession. Chiropractic is actually so safe that my malpractice insurance premium is only $1,250 per year. (For comparison, an OBGYN’s ranges anywhere from $85,000 to $200,000 per year).

Chiropractic is the only profession in the world that diagnoses and treats vertebral subluxations (spinal misalignments that interfere with the brain to body messages). If you choose not to seek out chiropractic care because you fear it, try researching it to better understand it. Know the consequences of not correcting your subluxations. Call and interview doctors of all different techniques to see which you are most comfortable with. It may lead to the greatest health transformation you’ve ever had.
